What Are Greenhouse Gases?

So, what are greenhouse gases, and what are the effects of them on the planet, you may ask? Well, to begin, greenhouse gases, functioning much like a greenhouse, are gases in the atmosphere of Earth that trap heat by absorbing and re-emitting infrared radiation. This causes the Earth's temperature to keep rising, leading to global warming.

The Impact on Our Planet

This phenomenon poses severe risks to human health, ecosystems, and our overall society's safety and stability. An increase in temperatures is also largely associated with an increase in natural disasters and habitat loss. Eventually, the planet will become so hot that it will no longer comfortably support most life, including humans

How You Can Make a Difference

However, there are many ways you can help lower the carbon dioxide being released into Earth's atmosphere, such as recycling, composting, using a bike or walking instead of using a car, or even avoiding unnecessary purchases to reduce energy used in manufacturing.

Recycling & Composting
Bike or Walk Instead of Driving
Avoid Unnecessary Purchases
Plant Trees & Gardens

The Power of Tree Planting

One of the best actions you can take is planting trees. Not only do trees produce oxygen, but they also take in carbon dioxide (CO2), a primary type of greenhouse gas. On average, one tree has the ability to sequester around 0.5-1 ton of CO₂ over its lifetime of 40-100 years, which is equal to offsetting the CO₂ emitted from driving 1,500-2000 miles in a typical car each year.

0.5-1
Tons of CO₂ sequestered per tree over its lifetime
40-100
Years of carbon absorption per tree
1,500-2,000
Miles of car emissions offset annually per tree

Join Carbon Roots Mission

Planting trees to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is a central part of Carbon Roots's mission. So, if you get a chance, go to one of our non-profit volunteering events and help us make the community a better place to live in.
