Our story, mission, and the people behind our organization
Carbon Roots is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to combating climate change through the development of carbon sink gardens in communities throughout Monmouth County, New Jersey. Our mission is to empower individuals, families, and communities to take meaningful action against global warming through sustainable gardening practices.
We believe that small, local actions can create significant global impact when communities work together. By creating gardens specifically designed to maximize carbon sequestration, we're helping to reduce greenhouse gas concentrations while simultaneously creating beautiful, functional green spaces that enhance our communities.
Through education, resources, and hands-on support, we're building a network of carbon-absorbing gardens that serve as both practical climate solutions and living demonstrations of environmental stewardship.
The principles that guide our work and shape our approach to environmental action
We believe in taking responsibility for our environmental impact and working actively to protect and restore natural systems.
We recognize that lasting change happens when communities come together around shared goals and values.
We believe in equipping people with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to take meaningful environmental action.
We strive to make environmental action accessible to everyone, regardless of background, resources, or experience.
Carbon Roots began with a simple question asked by our founder, Shivali Sethi, when she was just 15 years old: "What can I do in my own community to help fight climate change?" After researching carbon sequestration and sustainable gardening practices, Shivali realized that specially designed gardens could serve as effective carbon sinks while providing numerous other environmental and community benefits.
What started as a school project quickly evolved into a passion and then a mission. With support from her family, particularly her father who helped establish the organizational structure, Shivali began reaching out to local officials, environmental experts, and community leaders in Monmouth County.
Today, Carbon Roots works with multiple towns throughout the county, providing resources, expertise, and support for the development of carbon sink gardens. Our comprehensive guidebooks have helped hundreds of residents create their own carbon-absorbing gardens, and our community projects have transformed unused spaces into thriving green areas that benefit both people and the planet.
While we've grown significantly since our founding, we remain true to our original vision: empowering ordinary people to take extraordinary action for our environment.
